Julia "Joules" was born in Longview, Washington and went to Western Washington University where she earned a BS in Visual Communications with focus in computer illustration and animation. In 1998 she won Real Networks International Flash Animation Award with an animation called “Momm!!”. The jury included Stan Lee and Bill Plympton.

After a twenty year hiatus Joules has re-emerged into showing her new style of painting using hair picks, chop sticks, meat forks and other non-traditional objects to apply paint to canvas. The natural affect of these tools are groupings of impasto strokes that resemble Pointillism and Impressionism. She paints the natural scenery of the Pacific Northwest. Many of her paintings are memories of time spent at her family's cabin on Mount St. Helens before the eruption in 1980 when the cabin was destroyed. A book encapsulating these memories as paintings and stories is in progress.

Julia, why are you using the name "Joules"?

Hey Julia, why are you using the name "Joules"?

Yes, my formal name is Julia. I'm named after my great grandmother, Julia Kinney.
A handful of years ago I checked how many people shared my name. 1200 Julia Martins and 2000 Julie Martins. I needed a way to distinguish myself from others that shared the same name.

My nickname is "Joules". That particular spelling (newtons of energy) is from spending many years riding electric powered mountain bikes and producing an e-zine about electric powered bikes and cars.

There you have it. That's how I came to be known as Joules and business name JoulesPaints.

"Julia Martin, design director for V is for Voltage magazine, sets a high bar for the ebikes she test-rides and writes about. Her recommendations are based on a rigorous series of tests over different kinds of surface materials. “My daily ride includes mixed trails and roads and I rode the heck out of my [bike] until the . . . motor failed and the second set of tires were literally worn bare.”
